It is customary for us to embark on focus issues that illuminate cutting-edge areas of research. In this vein, we are poised to unveil a compilation that delves deeply into the expansive domain of Organic Electrochemical Transistors (OECTs). The significance of OECTs lies in their unparalleled versatility and adaptability. They offer a bridge between biology and electronics, paving the way for next-generation biosensors and bioelectronics, with applications ranging from real-time health monitoring to neural interfacing. Moreover, their low-power operation and compatibility with flexible substrates hold the promise of revolutionizing wearable and implantable technologies. This curated collection aims to spotlight the recent strides made in this field, encompassing an array of topics such as pioneering designs and synthetic methodologies for OECTs, exhaustive physical and chemical explorations of their structures and properties, as well as their diverse applications across a multitude of disciplines.

Synthetic extracellular matrices (ECMs) mimics act as functional biomaterials and can be applied in 3D in vitro cultures, functional organoids, tissue engineering or even regenerative medicine. Compared to natural biopolymeric building blocks, synthetic ECM mimics offer molecular and macromolecular design of physico-chemical parameters, biomolecular information and mechancial properties from bottom up. In this focus issue, we highlight state of the art contributions from this quickly developing research field. Three key aspects are covered:
1) fundamental properties of ECM mimics, correlating chemical, structural and dynamic features,
2) synthetic methodologies and conjugation strategies to generate functional scaffolds with tailorable properties
3) integration and study of binding epitopes and the use of biomolecular motifs to induce and modulate cell fate.

Batteries are an integral part of implementing renewable energy. Over the next century, batteries will become ubiquitous. The exponential demand for batteries will lead to a substantial sustainability problem.  In this regard, searching for electroactive organic molecules could pave the way for next-generation batteries. Using organic materials for battery electrodes makes it possible to recycle them sustainably. This special issue aims to cover the latest advances in organic batteries and provide a platform for discussions and collaborations among organic chemists and experts in electrochemistry.

The topic of interest for this issue includes, but are not limited to, Redox flow battery, Supercapacitors, organic electrolytes, polymer membranes for redox flow battery and, in general, organic electrode materials for batteries.
