Substituted and functionalized five-membered carbocylic rings are common in natural and bioactive compounds; however, their synthesis continues to present challenges in spite of the many methods existing for their preparation, for example cyclizations and ring expansions. Recently, Professor Tehshik P. Yoon and his group from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (USA) described a new, elegant approach to these compounds.

Professor Yoon said: “We believe that the results reported in this paper are interesting because the synthesis of five-membered carbocycles remains a challenge, especially in comparison to six-membered rings, and the photocatalytic method we have developed seems to work well with a broader range of less-electronically-biased substrates than many alternative methods.”
