Heterocycles represent a gold mine for pharmaceuticals and there is a constant push in medicinal and organic chemistry for identifying novel heterocyclic scaffolds that could offer new chemical space for drug discovery endeavors. Recently, the group of Professor Naresh Kumar from The University of New South Wales (Sydney, Australia) described a general methodology for accessing novel fused tetracyclic heterocycles – amenable to carrying a wide range of different substituents – incorporating an indole ring, which is often present in bioactive substances.
Professor Kumar said: “The described synthesis is versatile and gives rapid access to benzo[6,7]azepino[3,2-b]indol-12-ones, a new class of heterocyclic compounds.”
