Polysaccharide components of the cell wall of pathogenic bacteria are key therapeutic targets for treating infections such as food borne gastrointestinal disorders, which are responsible for hospitalization and deaths of millions all over the world, especially in developing countries. Salmonella strains are among the culprits for some of the most serious gastrointestinal infections. The group of Professor Anup Kumar Misra from the Bose Institute (Kolkata, India) has recently reported the total synthesis of a pentasaccharide, which is a potential tool for studying novel antimicrobial approaches against Salmonella.

Professor Misra said: “The synthesis of a rare sugar intermediate, 3-azido-3-deoxy-d-fucosyl thioglycoside has been achieved for the first time and used in the multi-step synthesis of a pentasaccharide corresponding to the cell wall O-polysaccharide of Salmonella enterica O55 strain.”
