Arylalkynes are important structural intermediates in organic chemistry owing to the unique properties of their C–C triple bond, which enables a range of useful synthetic transformations. Although many efforts have been directed towards the development of efficient and versatile protocols for the preparation of arylalkynes, their synthesis continues to attract considerable interest in the organic chemistry community. Recently, the group of Professor Hideki Yorimitsu from Kyoto University (Japan) reported another important option to the toolbox of methods available for accessing arylalkynes.

Professor Yorimitsu said: “This promising Sonogashira-type alkynylation has become a reality by overcoming the contradiction that an electron-rich Pd–NHC catalyst should cleave rather strong C–S bonds in the presence of potentially catalyst-oxidizing sulfenate anions as the leaving groups.”
