Enaminones are useful building blocks in organic synthesis, but their synthesis can be challenging and operationally complex. The use of multicomponent reactions and environmentally compatible conditions is particularly attractive with the view of operating in mild reaction conditions, especially if the process has a broad substrate scope.

A new method for preparing a large variety of enaminones was recently reported by Professor Liangguang Wang and his group from Anshun University (P. R. of China) in collaboration with the group of Professor Xiaoyu Zhou from Liupanshui Normal University (P. R. of China).

Professor Wang said: “A palladium-catalyzed four-component carbonylative addition reaction of aryl bromides, amines, and alkynes has been well established, offering a simple approach to enaminones in moderate to good yields and excellent selectivity.”
