Visible-Light-Induced Adamantylation of Azoles

Visible-Light-Induced Decarboxylative C–H Adamantylation of Azoles at Ambient Temperature: J. Koeller, P. Gandeepan, L. Ackermann

Incorporation of an adamantyl group – with its peculiar lipophilicity, steric demand, dispersion attraction, conformational stability and rigidity – into polymers and functional materials is known to significantly improve their solubility and thermal stability, as well as other physico-chemical properties. The group of Professor Lutz Ackermann from the Georg-August-Universität in Göttingen (Germany) has now reported a new convenient method for achieving the incorporation of an adamantly unit into azoles.

  • Synthesis of 2-adamantly-substituted azoles

Professor Ackermann said: “We have successfully demonstrated visible-light-enabled dual acridinium photocatalysis merged with cobalt catalysis for oxidant-free decarboxylative C‒H adamantylation, notably at room temperature.”
