Thieme Chemistry mourns the loss of Professor Ei-ichi Negishi

Eminent chemist and Science of Synthesis author Ei-ichi Negishi passed away on June 6th, 2021.

Thieme Chemistry were sad to learn of the death of Prof. Ei-Ichi Negishi, who passed away on June 6th at the age of 85. Prof. Negishi, who spent the majority of his career at Purdue University (Indiana, USA), was a joint recipient of the 2010 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on “palladium-catalyzed cross couplings in organic synthesis”. In particular, Prof. Negishi is notable for his development of the Negishi reaction, where organozinc compounds are coupled with organic halides and triflates under palladium catalysis.

Prof. Negishi authored several chapters for Science of Synthesis, focused on the organometallic chemistry and the carbon–carbon bond forming processes that he was notable for developing. Further details of his Science of Synthesis contributions can be found here.

He will be dearly missed, and our sincere condolences go to his family, friends, and colleagues.

For more information about the life and work of Prof. Negishi, there is an article on the Purdue University website here.
