Interview with SYNLETT Best Paper Award winner Frank Glorius

Asymmetric transition-metal-catalyzed hydrogenation is a very attractive tool to produce enantiomerically pure organic molecules with still one great challenge remaining: the efficient asymmetric hydrogenation of aromatic and heteroaromatic substrates. In recent years, several research groups around the world have contributed to this challenging transformation but scope and efficiency of these transformations generally remain quite limited. In 2011, Frank Glorius and his group from the University of Münster (Germany) developed a new ruthenium–NHC based catalyst system enabling several different classes of heteroarenes to be successfully reduced. In the award-winning SYNLETT paper, they presented their results on the asymmetric hydrogenation of 2-pyridones which are nice precursors towards piperidine product motifs.
