Non proteinogenic β-amino acids are very important compounds in medicinal and biological chemistry. They are also frequently encountered in natural and bioactive peptides, thus representing very valuable synthetic targets for organic chemists. The use of metathesis reactions for accessing functionalized β-amino acids has been recently covered in a Review by Loránd Kiss and co-workers from the University of Szeged (Hungary).

Professor Kiss said: “Metathesis is like a game: playing with the olefinic bonds by destroying them and creating new bond systems is quite similar to a game; in chemistry for example, by means of metathesis reactions highly valuable olefinated cyclic or open-chain β-amino acid derivatives could be created with stereocontrol.”
