Ubiquitin is a small (76 amino acids) protein that can be added to a protein in an important biological process called ubiquitination, which has a number of signalling effects including the proteasome degradation of the ubiquitinated protein itself. Recently, Professor Jiabin Li from University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei (P. R. of China) and Professor Honggang Hu from the Second Military Medical University, Shanghai (P. R. of China) have reported a new strategy for the ubiquitination of a histone (histones are key protein components of chromatin, playing an important role in gene regulation) mimic.

Professor Hu said: “A new ubiquitinated histone mimic through thioether linkage was successfully synthesized and proved to be a good surrogate for natural ubiquitinated histone.”
