Propane Phosphonic Acid Anhydride (T3P®): A Desulfurating Agent for the Synthesis of Isothiocyanates

Isothiocyanates are extremely important intermediates in organic chemistry and also find applications in biological chemistry and materials science. One of the best known and most used methods of preparing isothiocyanates from primary amines and CS2 was reported by Hofmann almost 150 years ago. Since then, a number of desulfurating agents have been reported for accomplishing this transformation, and recently Professor Tadeusz Gajda and co-workers from the Lodz University of Technology (Poland) have described a new convenient desulfurating reagent having broad scope.

Professor Gajda said: “I believe that the use of environmentally friendly, stable, non-toxic and safe propane phosphonic acid anhydride (T3P®) as a desulfurating agent in the synthesis of structurally diverse isothiocyanates, occurring under mild conditions and without racemization, makes our approach highly recommendable.”
