Continuous Photochemical Benzyne-Forming Process

Development of a Continuous Photochemical Benzyne-Forming Process: C. Bracken, A. S. Batsanov, M. Baumann

SynOpen 2021, 5, 29-35

Benzyne is a highly reactive and very valuable intermediate in organic synthesis. However, its generation and use are not commonly exploited strategies in the arsenal of organic chemists. This may be due to numerous reasons, including the necessity for generating bespoke precursors and activation processes, as well as concerns about the scale-up of the exothermic benzyne-forming reaction. Recently, the group of Professor Marcus Baumann from the University College Dublin (Republic of Ireland) has disclosed a novel continuous-flow process that enables the safe generation and derivatization of benzyne under photochemical conditions (led lamp, 365 nm).

Professor Baumann said: "Exploiting photochemical reactions via continuous flow processing has resulted in numerous highly efficient transformations over the last years and we believe that our recent work which demonstrates this approach on underexploited benzyne-forming processes will spark renewed interest as well as new applications of this valuable chemistry."
