Antibiotic resistance continues to represent a major health threat and the identification of novel antibiotics effective on resistant bugs constitutes an important piece of the complex jigsaw that urgently needs to be solved to overcome this emergency. (–)-Pentenomycin I is a member of a broader family of cyclopentenoid antibiotics, possessing moderate activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. As a strategy to improve the pharmacological profile of this class of compounds, a European team of researchers led by Professor Christos I. Stathakis from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece) has reported a novel class of analogues of the title compound.

Professor Stathakis said: “Linear lypophilic substituents at the alpha-carbon of (–)-pentenomycin I proved promising modified analogues for the development of new antimicrobial agents.”
