Highly reactive and strained heterocycles are of great interest as building blocks in synthetic organic chemistry and drug discovery. One such unit that has attracted recent interest is the 2-oxa-6-azaspiro[3.3]heptane unit, which has been proposed as a surrogate for morpholine in drug-like compounds and whose synthesis has been shown to be challenging. Recently, the group of Dr. Richard N. S. van der Haas at the company Mercachem Process Research B.V. (Nijmegen, The Netherlands), in collaboration with a group at Bayer Pharma AG (Wuppertal, Germany), has described a novel approach to the target compound.

Dr. van der Haas said: “With this well-scalable approach 2-oxa-6-azaspiro[3,3]heptane is finally available as a stable, crystalline, well-defined and more soluble sulfonate salt ready for use in chemical conversions.”
