Rubicene is an intriguing polycyclic compound named after his characteristic ruby color. This compound was described for the first time in 1873 and it can be considered a substructure of C70. Functionalized derivatives of rubicene are of interest in materials science (for example for electroluminescent organic materials and light-emitting diode devices). Recently, the group of Professor Shinji Toyota (Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan) reported a straightforward entry to differently functionalized rubicene derivatives by treatment of 9,10-diarylanthracenes with DDQ and triflic acid.
