Polyunsaturated fatty acid amides (FAAs) are important natural compounds displaying a wide range of biological activities. Some FAAs are pharmacologically active components of natural extracts which have been used in traditional medicine. One of them is δ-sanshool – isolated and identified for the first time in 1997 – which is present in extracts of Rutaceae species, whose extracts have been used to treat toothaches or as food spices. Now, Professors Claudia Mugnaini and Federico Corelli from the University of Siena (Italy) have described a synthesis of δ-sanshool and some of its analogues.
Synthetic approach to δ-sanshoolzoom
Professor Mugnaini said: “Nineteen years after its isolation from Budo-Zanthoxylum fruit, we have described the synthesis of δ-sanshool, a molecule which could represent the prototype of new anti type-1 diabetes drugs.”
