Total Synthesis of Lagerstannin C

Hidetoshi Yamada describes the completed total synthesis of lagerstannin C.

Total Synthesis of Lagerstannin C: Follow-up of the Khanbabaee’s Synthesis: Y. Kaneko, S. Wakamori, K. Ikeuchi, K. Ohara, T. Tanaka, H. Yamada Synthesis 2017, 49, DOI: 10.1055/s-0036-1588477

Lagerstannin C is a naturally occurring D-gluconic acid esterified with polyphenolic acids that can be extracted from leaves and fruits of the plant Lagerstroemia speciosa, also known as giant or Queen’s crape-myrtle, which is native of tropical southern Asia. A first synthetic study on Lagerstannin C was originally reported by Khanbabaee et al. (Synthesis 2001, 1585), but the synthesis was unfinished as it stopped at the level of the fully O-benzylated compound (i.e. incorporating eleven benzyl groups). Now, the group of Professor Hidetoshi Yamada from Kwansei Gakuin University (Japan) – building on some of this previous work – has reported the successful completion of the total synthesis of lagerstannin C.
