Cristina Nevado is the Dr. Margaret Faul Women in Chemistry Award Winner 2021
Prof. Cristina Nevado from the University of Zurich (Switzerland) has been chosen as the second recipient of the Dr. Margaret Faul Award for Women in Chemistry.
Science of Synthesis and Thieme Chemistry are delighted to announce that the Dr. Margaret Faul Women in Chemistry Award Winner 2021 is Cristina Nevado from University of Zurich (Switzerland) who is acknowledged as a rising star in the field of synthetic organic chemistry. She is recognized as an outstanding recipient of the award due to the breadth and diversity of her work which spans the development of new catalytic methods and elucidation of underlying mechanisms, important contributions in the synthesis of medicinally relevant natural products, and development of bioactive chemical probes.
The award will be presented to her at the European Symposium on Organic Chemistry Virtual Mini Symposium on Monday, July 5, 2021.
About Cristina Nevado
Cristina Nevado received her PhD in organic chemistry from Autónoma University of Madrid in October 2004 working with Antonio Echavarren on catalysis using late transition metals. Her first independent position as an Assistant Professor started at the University of Zurich in 2007. Among other awards in recognition of her contributions in the field of synthetic organic chemistry during her impressive career, she received a Thieme Chemistry Journals Award in 2011. She became Full Professor at the University of Zurich in 2013. Her research program is focused on complex chemical synthesis and new organometallic reactions.

The selection committee co-chairs Dr. Margaret Faul and Prof. Alois Fürstner commented on the second recipient of the Women in Chemistry Award 2021:
As we nominate our second Women in Chemistry awardee it is exciting to see the positive support and feedback we have obtained. We received many outstanding nominations and the award was very competitive, but I am delighted that Prof. Cristina Nevado was selected as our 2021 awardee. At the University of Zürich Cristina has developed an outstanding research program advancing new and innovative methods to the field of synthetic chemistry while being an excellent role model and mentor to our younger scientists and truly exemplifies the attributes of the award.

I am thrilled that the Selection Committee chose Cristina as this year’s recipient of the Dr. Margaret Faul Award for Women in Chemistry. I have been following Cristina’s stellar independent career path very closely: the breadth and depth of her program are truly impressive, ranging from fundamental organometallic reactivity to medicinal chemistry. She is a role model as well as an excellent scientist, and hence a most deserving awardee.
